The USA Basketball Women’s National Team defeated Spain 77-64 to win gold in the 2014 Women’s World Championship Sunday. They had a perfect record of 6-0 during the tournament.

The 2014 WNBA MVP, Maya Moore, led them in scoring with 18 points.

Guard Diana Taurasi scored six points and added eight assists, while guard Lindsay Whalen added 12 points of her own.

For Spain, forward Sancho Lyttle led the team with a total of 16 points.

In the first four minutes the U.S led by 13 points, which left Spain — whose record was 5-1 — to play catch up throughout the rest of the game.

Moore’s ability to shoot the three led to the teams’ ability to jump on Spain with an early lead — even though the Spaniards cut the lead to 24-17 halfway through the first quarter. Whalen scored four points to end the quarter, which helped the U.S build an 11-point lead.

At halftime, the U.S led 48-29. In the second half, they led by as many as 25 points — making it too tough for Spain to answer.

This is now USA’s ninth FIBA World Championship gold medal, as they have a combined record of 103-21 in FIBA World Championship play.
