Martin Brodeur’s Relationship with New Jersey Devils

On Thursday, legendary NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur announced his retirement and joined the St. Louis Blues’ front office.

However, his retirement news conference took place in St. Louis, not Newark, where he played nearly his entire 21-year career with the New Jersey Devils. And, the press conference took less than 18 minutes. Many of you might be wondering why the news conference was not in New Jersey and what’s the current state of his relationship between general manager Lou Lamoriello and the Devils.

Well, first and foremost, Brodeur indicated this week that he, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong, and Lamoriello have been in constant contact since he joined the Blues as a player and now as a senior adviser.

Brodeur and Lamoriello have also been in constant contact all year long. The plan is for him to return to the Devils and work in their front office sometime in the near future. But, for now, Brodeur is going to work for St. Louis. He gave no commitments beyond this season to either the Blues or the Devils.

So, in retrospect, Brodeur and Lamoriello are still very close friends. I would expect the Devils to honor Brodeur sometime later this year, possibly even before they reunite their 1995 Stanley Cup Championship team in early March. And, I do expect there to be a long and lengthy press conference as well. There is no question the Devils will retire Brodeur’s No. 30 jersey and I expect it to happen sometime next season or the following year.

Lamoriello did say, Brodeur has an open door job invitation with the Devils when and if he wants it. For now, he will work out the rest of this season including the playoffs, should the Blues be there, in St. Louis. Yes, Brodeur has been critical of Lamoriello in recent years mainly due to his handling of free agency, but he will work with the Devils someday, maybe even succeed Lou as the general manager. Or, he will be the President of Hockey Operations and hire his own general manager.
